ud/delstate

you can draw your own opinions from this espn article by jeff pearlman, but i think its probably true that racism is the main factor in the reasoning university of delaware won’t agree to play delaware state in football. true, saying that delstate doesn’t have as great a team as ud might be an understatement, but after living in delaware for the first 18 -21 years of my life, i can’t deny that the article represents a valid point.

more on tennis

i had tennis lessons again last night. i am feeling more comfortable and think i am beginning to overcome the aforementioned weaknesses. i still wait a little too long before i swing, but i have been able to correct this error some of the times i am swinging. i guess it will just take practice! also, i didn’t swing too hard like i did at tuesdays practice, so that is hopeful!

today im lucky!

sevens.jpg it was luck! i received an email from smartbargains.com this morning regarding whatever sale of the day they were having, and instead of deleting it as i typically do , i decided to browse around the site. i came across these  sevens and was surprised to see they were only $16.98! i was even more surprised to find that there was only one pair left and that pair was in my size! i quickly purchased this find and am excited for their arrival! i later went back to the site and purchased two sweaters for less of a bargain (even though they were both 60% off). i can’t wait for everything to come in!! i really like the red shoes shown with the jeans; maybe i will have to purchase them too!

forehand & backhand

tennis.bmp

yesterday was my first step in becoming the tennis pro i’m destined to be. it was the first day of beginner one tennis and the focus of the class was learning the forehand and the backhand swings. there are a few key areas i need to work on:

  • try not to hit the ball too hard. coach noticed i was trying to swing too hard and since i don’t have control at this early stage, i need to instead focus on having a slower, smooth swing.
  • don’t hesitate! i tend to hesitate and then hit the ball at the wrong point or totally miss.
  • swing smoothly….because i hesitate, i am jerky in my swing and don’t follow through.

if i focus on correcting these problems, i am sure to perfect these two swings! my next class is on thursday, so i will keep you updated with what we learn next!

monday night!

in celebration of the eagles home opener on monday night football, i have copied and pasted a list of mnf’s most memorable moments compiled by entertainment weekly’s dalton ross (i think it is noteworthy that he has a first name for a last name and a last name for a first name). so….here you go and GO EAGLES!

Monday Night Football’s 10 Most Memorable Moments
Here is a look back at the agony and the ecstasy.
By Dalton Ross

1  Many players have gotten their big break playing on Monday Night Football, but no break was as big — or as gruesome — as Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann’s right leg. ”That’s the shot everyone remembers,” says MNF analyst John Madden, ”where Lawrence Taylor hits him. You knew immediately that that was it for Joe Theismann.” And it was — the QB never played again. But for all those who miraculously did not vomit the first time while watching Theismann’s bone snap and protrude out of his skin, ABC was kind enough to replay the image approximately…oh, 837 times. Still, there is one person who to this day has never seen the play — Theismann himself. ”I have no desire to look at it,” says the victim (who, ironically enough, will be announcing MNF games on ESPN next year). ”I know what happened.” NOV. 18, 1985

2 What started off as unintentionally hilarious (Terrell Owens saying selfless things like ”Donovan needs me” and ”All of Philadelphia is counting on me”) turned downright scandalous when Nicollette Sheridan dropped her towel to reveal nothing — and everything — in a racy pregame skit. ”It was in poor taste,” says Theismann. ”Especially on the heels of the Janet Jackson situation at the Super Bowl. Something like that has its place — on Desperate Housewives.” NOV. 15, 2004

3 Controversial announcer (and civil rights activist) Howard Cosell ignited protest after calling Redskins wideout Alvin Garrett a ”little monkey.” Cosell quit before the next season. SEPT. 5, 1983

4 ”An unspeakable tragedy confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City.” It fell to Cosell, during a Patriots-Dolphins game, to break the news to much of America that John Lennon had been killed. ”There weren’t all the other news sources then,” says Madden of the early-’80s three-channel universe. ”If they were watching the game now and that happened, they’d get the news from 100 other places as well.” DEC. 8, 1980

5 After being paralyzed in a 1978 preseason game, Patriots wideout Darryl Stingley made an emotional return to Schaeffer Stadium for the 1979 opener against the Steelers, where he received a standing ovation from both players and fans. SEPT. 3, 1979

6 It remains the most anticipated and watched (by about 70 million people) Monday Night Football game ever: the 12-0 Chicago Bears taking on Dan Marino and the only franchise ever to boast a perfect season — the Miami Dolphins. ”I didn’t think anybody could beat the Bears,” says Madden. ”That’s the most dominant defense that I’ve ever seen.” But with several members of the undefeated 1972 Dolphins team in attendance, Marino shredded Chicago for a 38-24 victory. For the Bears, the loss still proved only half as embarrassing as ”The Super Bowl Shuffle.” DEC. 2, 1985

7 Many people associate Monday Night Football with downing a few drinks, but not usually in the announcers’ booth. While broadcasting a 1970 Eagles-Giants game, Cosell was slurring his words before disappearing in the second quarter. (”I heard he took a taxi from Philadelphia all the way home to New York,” says Madden.) Legend has it that martinis sent over by the Eagles owner did him in, leading Cosell to vomit on colleague Don Meredith’s cowboy boots. Cosell later blamed his demeanor on the effects of ”a virulent virus.” NOV. 23, 1970

8 After scoring his second TD against the Seahawks, 49er Terrell Owens autographed the football with a Sharpie retrieved from his sock, ushering in a new era of elaborate touchdown celebrations. ”First it was a Sharpie, and then it was a cell phone,” says Madden. ”And if you keep letting them go, it’s gonna be a refrigerator or something.” OCT. 14, 2002

9 Packers quarterback Brett Favre has played through pain before, but nothing close to what he experienced against the Raiders in 2003. Suiting up the day after his father died of a heart attack, Favre threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-7 blowout. ”Anything that he threw up, his receivers were going to catch,” says Madden. ”It didn’t make any difference if it was single coverage, double coverage, triple coverage — the guys around him just felt, If he can get out there in this situation, we’re not gonna let anyone else get that ball.” ”We didn’t witness a football game that night,” says Theismann. ”We witnessed a man overcoming incredible personal odds to be at his best. That whole game transcended football.” DEC. 22, 2003

10 Seeking bigger ratings and buzz, ABC tapped comedian Dennis Miller to join the announcers’ booth. The experiment lasted two seasons. ”When people watch football, they don’t want to look up words to figure out what they mean,” says Theismann. ”Our game is about guys running into one another.” JULY 31, 2000

new project!

img_0351.jpgafter reading one of  pammy’s blog posts about decorating and aquiring pieces of furniture for her new apartment, i feared that some of my home furnishings were getting pretty stale. i was inspired to give them an update and am tackling the project of restaining my dining room table and chairs. i aquired this dining set when i set out on my own and moved from my parents’ home to columbia, maryland about three years ago. my parents graciously helped me with the arduous task of moving and hauled all of my junk from delaware to maryland. i had a fairly large one bedroom apartment to fill and upon my parents departure, they noticed that as i enjoyed the ownership of an abundance of bedroom furniture, my living room and dining area remained quite empty except for a tv and boxes of some personal belongings. So my parents did as my parents do and were kind enough to buy me a dining set, sofa, and loveseat from a local thrift store to fill the void that these two rooms possessed. the furnishings that they bought me have served me quite well over the past few years, but i’m growing bored with the dining set. i think i would like to restain it a bit darker than what it is and give it a weathered, worn look. i am also going to “re-upholster” the seats of the chairs to help give them a more updated look. i began the task of stripping the chairs today, and made a beginner’s mistake of trying to strip all of them at once. i applied the paint stripper to all the chairs, waited a little bit, and then tried to scrape the old finish off. by the time i got to the third chair, the stripper was dry and too difficult to remove. at least i know this now and will have to redo these chairs one at a time. it might take longer than anticipated, but i am  excited for the final outcome! here are some before pictures. i will make sure to show more pics once i am completed (it might take a couple weeks).

my first assignment!

for my first assignment i had to complete an ”all about me” questionare for my online course. i omitted a couple of the questions because i don’t want people to know where i live and work. i’m rather arrogant in thinking that people who don’t know me actually read this.

here it is:
How many courses have you already completed in CLIS?
This is my first semester at CLIS, so I haven’t completed any courses. I am currently taking LBSC 601, 650, and 670.
What is your educational background and job history (briefly)?
I graduated in 2004 from Dickinson College (a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania) with a B.A. in American Studies. The concentration of most of my work was class studies and conflict. After I graduated I worked in the accounting department for a homebuilder. I kind of got “stuck” there for two years and am very happy to now be here at CLIS!
What particular achievements or accomplishments have you attained that you are especially proud of?
A recent accomplishment of mine is starting a blog. Its been something I’ve been wanting to do and I finally started in the middle of August. I really enjoy having a place where I can express myself and write whatever I want.
What is your major career goal in the information field?
My career goal is to work in public libraries, particularly in community outreach. I also think it would be interesting to work in a special library…maybe in a museum or a rare books collection.
What are your personal favorites (hobby, sport, cultural/entertainment, pets, travel, or other)?
I love travelling. As an undergrad I studied abroad in Ireland and had the chance to travel throughout Europe and it was an amazing experience. I’m trying to save up for a trip to Ecuador next summer and see the Galapagos Islands. I also enjoy reading. I am currently reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke which is an enchanting novel that I’d recommend to anyone. I am a proud servant of a cat named Puck who just now decided to walk across my keyboard. I guess he’s trying to remind me to include him in here. I am a big Philadelphia Eagles fan and am very excited for the upcoming season!
Name one of your favorite fiction authors.
I really like Jane Austen novels. I did my senior thesis on Harry Crews, so it would be wrong if I didn’t include him too.
Do you read a newspaper daily? If yes, do you read it on paper? On the Web? Both on paper and the Web?
I try to read the Washington Post daily online, but unfortunately only get around to it about 2 or 3 times a week.

“checked out”

in my search for more school supplies for library school i came across this very fitting and cute personal library kit at www.uncommongoods.com! it is useful for those who lend out books from their personal collections to friends and family. however, this tool would probably benefit my friends more than myself as i can easily count five books that are sitting on my bookshelf that belong to them. i do think i have one book “checked out” by one of my friends. regardless, i would be happy to accept this as a jaime going back to school present.

school supplies

yay! i got school supplies on my way home from work today. I decided that I am going to keep all of my notes and coursework in binders for each class instead of using folders or spiral bound notebooks as i have in the past. look at my new stuff! i included my syllabus for one of my classes in the photo too (its the first syllabus that i have gotten so far). i’m excited school is so close!

my cat named puck

these are pictures of my cat puck. our union began while visiting my friend in buckhannon wv (where my friend was attending school). during this visit, we stopped by the local wal-mart to purchase something or another and came across a woman giving away kittens! i picked out beautiful puck and took him to live at college with me. he is a very adaptable cat as he has lived in four states (west virginia, maryland, delaware and pennsylvania). here is a picture of him as an extra cute kitten and as a handsome full-grown cat!

my fantasy football team

i had a fantasy football draft today. here is my awesome team! unfortunately i have players from the cowboys and redskins on my team, which means every sunday i have to root for a cowboy and a redskin to be productive (ick!). of course, if they are playing the eagles on a given sunday, i will have to root against my fantasy players. my friend dave won’t play fantasy for this exact reason, which is perfectly understandable. anyway, here is my team!

tennis pro!

cute-tennis-accessories.jpg

i have two tennis raquets that i got from my old work for an excellent deal (free). they were used as decor in one of the model homes and surreptitiously found their way into my hands. unfortunateley, my skills as a tennis pro are zilch. this past weekend i tried to volley in the yard with my brother, but i couldn’t really hit the ball (probably the most important skill in tennis). when i did happen to hit it, it would go sideways, backwards, or too far, and more often than not, i would hit it into trees or bushes. this attempt at volleying lasted approximately ten minutes and ended in my brothers frustration of having to reach into bushes or under trees to retrieve the ball (he was afraid a snake was going to attack).  he also played on his school’s tennis team, so i am sure his patience with my not so stellar skills was dwindling. i have concluded that mere practice will be a rather fruitless endeavor on my part and that i must seek out formal lessons if i ever want to master the sport of tennis (or at least not look foolish while i play). i have looked at various rec centers for lessons, and the best option i have found is taking lessons at school.  they are offering six group lessons for the reasonable student price of $50.00, so consider me to be the next up and coming phenom. i also want to add that it was a wonderful coincidence that my boyfriend’s sister introduced me to Blueprint magazine over summer vacation this past july. it had a tennis article with tips and suggestions on how to begin playing tennis and has helped me get an idea about what is needed to become an awesome tennis player. i suggest reading it to anyone who is looking to get into the sport of tennis!

“Air and Bourree”

this past weekend i went home to my parents house where i sought out my long neglected clarinet. i used to take private lessons and played it in the concert band in middle school and high school.  i haven’t really played it since, but now i have decided to resurrect my clarinet and start playing again.  last night i played a few songs for josh (my boyfriend/housemate) and russell (my other housemate) ….i think they found this exercise a bit awkward. the song i remembered and enjoyed the best was Handel’s “Air and Bourree.” anyway, i’m not as good as i used to be, but i will get better! once i thoroughly get reaquainted with my clarinet, i think i might try out for a local concert band.  before i do that, i need to take it to a repair shop to get it polished and maybe get it overhaulled. as you can see from the picture, the keys are a bit tarnished and i think some of the pads might need to be replaced.

my clarinet

anyway, does this mean i’m a dork?
